As bamboo extends further into the American landscape, curious Westerners are experimenting with this "new" renewable resource, creating functional, artistic and decorative work. During research for The Craft and Art of Bamboo, 30 Elegant Projects toMake for Home and Garden (Lark Books, 2001), Stangler discovered that while some Americans studied with Asian teachers, most learned by trial and error, adopting western tools and techniques. Stangler uses these readily available tools to demonstrate the basic "how-to's of bamboo" - cutting, splitting, attaching and preserving. In addition, slides of bamboo work reflecting the American application of bamboo are shown.
