I chose the title for this article to be deliberately provocative. Certainly, I want bamboo, and all my friends in The American Bamboo Society want it, but we do not really want very much bamboo, and we do not buy a lot of it. In 1995, I establisheda bamboo plantation by growing 22,000 clumps of Dendrocalamus strictus from seed. This project has been a labor of love for me, as it would have been for any of you. Our restored Hacienda Xixim deep in the jungles of southern Yucatan now has a beautifulbamboo forest. Today we produce hundreds of thousands of bamboo culms. We can find a use for only a fraction of these culms. I have concluded that if we of The American Bamboo Society really want bamboo to "make a difference" for good in the world, our major effort must be to find large new groups of people who want it.
