With some of the best organized cities I've seen in Latin America, and some great natural preserves, Veracruz state was a lot different than I expected. BOTA Director Gib Cooper and botanist Gilberto Cortes organized a tour of the state for seven of us north Americans so we could see the beauty of the place and start to understand the ways people in both countries can begin to offer help to the other. There are few bamboo structures, as the local bamboos tend to be small and the rain and rot ever-present. Even with 5 species of Guadua - some of the strongest bamboo in the world - very little is used, Here, one finds islands of small-diameter, solid Chusqueas and Otateas as well as Rhipidocladum, Olmeca and Guadua in ever-decreasing habitats. Botanist Gilberto Cortes reports the range of some of the rare species we saw has decreased by 20% in the five years he has monitored the area.
