Read the headline in GARDEN when the late Thomas Soderstrom of the Smithsonian went into details concerning the identity of the "most beautiful of Chinese bamboos", as E.H. Wilson dubbed his find, collected in the mountains of the Chinese province Hebei in 1907. The date of Dr. Soderstroms article was July/August 1979, dealing with the first flowers on this popular bamboo that for the first time had appeared in 1975 at Denmark. Now we are in the August of 2003, the identity of the bamboo for the time being established as Fargesia murielae, and still there are flowers!?
