摘要

Richard Haubrich founded the American Bamboo Society in 1979. He had tented a house in San Diego, California in 1974 that had Phyllostachys aurea growing in the garden. He liked its graceful look and its year-round green leaves, so he encouraged it with water and fertilizer. His landlady didn't mind it taking over the lawn, and said, "Let it grow". Haubrich was working at Scripps Institute where he met a colleague, Ken Brennecke. Both of them knew Gilbert Voss, then curator of Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas.
