River Cane (Arundinaria gigantea) is a unique woody grass, a tree grass. It is also a Bamboo and belongs to the subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae, subtribe Arundinariinae. The genus Arundinaria was erected by the French botanist Michaux in 1803for the North American Bamboo he called A. macrosperma (Michaux, 1803) - the species epithet referring to the large (10-12 mm) seed. The species, however, had been first formally named and described by the Englishman Walter in 1788 (Walter, 1788) although he had erroneously assigned it to genus Arundo - the related but non-bambusoid giant reed. Travel was neither easy nor fast in those days so one sample rested in London and one in Paris and no one was aware of their synonymy until about 1812 or 13 when Muhlenberg visited both and made the new combination Arundinaria gigantea using Walter's species epithet which had precedence and correctly assigning it to Michaux's new genus.
