Two Western Australians,Barry Marshall and Robin Warren,won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for their discovery that the bacterium Heliobacter pylori was the culprit causing many stomach ulcers.Traditionally held views in the early 1980s that the acidity in the stomach was the cause of ulcers proved hard to overcome,and most opposed the treatment of ulcers with antibiotics.
