During 1 996, a series of Draft European Standards for a variety of paving products was published (1 to 6) and each one included a requirement that the product should achieve a satisfactory level of slip/skid resistance. The two standards dealingwith concrete products refer to the requirement as slip/skid whilst those for clay and natural stone use the term slip. The term "skid" refers to the sliding of a vehicle tyre over a surface and "slip" refers to the sliding of a pedestrian's footwear.Each of the six standards describes a test method for evaluating the slipping and skidding resistance using the pendulum friction tester illustrated in Fig 1. Despite the publication of a now withdrawn European Prestandard setting out a procedure todetermine the polished skidding characteristics of paving products7, all of the six paving product standards recommend that testing be undertaken on unpolished surfaces.
