Twenty years ago,Australia released the world's first all-polymer banknote.The technology was developed by CSIRO in response to the high-quality counterfeiting of Australia's newly printed decimal currency very soon after its release in 1966.While the 1988 commemorative 10 banknote featured a very vivid and,at the time,highly counterfeit-resistant optically variable device(OVD)depicting Captain Cook(Fig.1),the feature that has stood the test of time in the face of counterfeiting attempts is the characteristic transparent window.This article is not the appropriate forum for chronicling the history of polymer banknotes,nor for extolling their virtues.
