Whether we are aware of it or not, all living things on this planet follow natural cycles created by such forces as the rotation of the earth and the phases of the moon. Following are some thoughts on how others have observed these cycles in the pastand how attention to these cycles may benefit the growing of holly in Maryland. The state of Maryland, located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, has four definite seasons of the year, and it is interesting to observe how holly responds tothe changing seasons. In the springtime, the holly sends out new growth, blooms, and the female sets fruit. In the summer, the new growth matures and becomes suitable for asexual reproduction, while the fruit matures but does not ripen. The fruit ripensin fall to various shades of red, yellow, orange, or black. At this time of year, the holly looks its best and is much in demand for holiday decorations. As winter progresses, the appearance of the holly may decline in response to inclement weather or the foraging of hungry birds or mammals. The cycle repeats itself as spring returns.
