High-conductivity solid-state electrolytes are important for the development of many electrochemical devices, including lithium batteries, fuel cells and dye-sensitised solar cells, for improved safety and to eliminate electrolyte leakage. Organic ionic plastic crystals are a unique family of materials that have recently shown significant promise in these applications because of their inherent safety, stability and high ionic conductivity. Understanding the complex phase behaviour and phase-dependent transport properties of these materials is crucial to their further development.
