While Airbus weathered employee and stockholder discontent over production delays and cost overruns on its A380 aircraft in Europe (see p. 20), the double-decked superjumbo passenger jet made its first arrivals in the U.S. to admiring crowds. Airplane enthusiasts lined roadways and filled parking lots under the flight paths at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York hoping to get a glimpse of the world's largest commercial aircraft as it touched down for its first U.S. visits. The aircraft, designed to carry from 555 to as many as 890 passengers, features approximately 30 metric tonnes/66,000 lb of structural composites, about 16 percent of the airframe weight of 170 metric tonnes (374,800 lb). Composites, structural and nonstructural, are said to make up between 25 and 28 percent of the craft's total empty weight of about 279 metric tonnes (617,000 lb).
