True to predictions, carbon fiber capacity continues to swell with another producer announcing an expansion and a fiberglass producer revealing that it will produce carbon fiber. Mitsubishi Rayon Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan, 5238) announced on Aug. 2 that it will construct an additional carbonization line with an annual capacity of 2,700 metric tonnes (6 million lb). The new line will be built at the company's Otake production center in Hiroshima Prefecture, the site of the company's precursor production. The new line represents an investment of about 12 billion yen or 107 million dollars (USD). Startup is anticipated in fourth quarter 2009.
