Shinano Kenshi Go. (Nagano, Japan) has developed a composite powder made up of carbon nanotubes and carbon silk, which features high electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. The composite is produced by mixing nanotubes into a solution of carbon silk that is obtained by sintering silk at a high temperature. Mixing the two components with ultrasound yields a composite powder that can conduct heat an estimated 10 times faster than nanotuberesin composites. According to the company, the powder is as electrically conductive as electrolytic copper but won't oxidize, as it contains no metal. The company is looking for methods to mass-produce the composite and plans to make samples available soon. Possible applications include the electrodes of fuel cells.
