The Pentagon is allowing the U.S. Navy to award more work on the DD(X) advanced destroyer, the U.S. Department of Defense's future multi-mission surface combat ship, but has stopped short of authorizing production. The Navy awarded a not-to-exceed ceiling price 53.4 million dollars (USD), with a limitation of 26.1 million dollars, cost-plus-award-fee, level of effort letter contract for the Phase IV DD(X) program transition design effort. The DD(X) will have a composite mast and deckhouse, consuming about 226,800 kg to 453,600 kg (500,000 lb to 1 million 1b) of carbon/vinyl ester composite per ship. Contracts awarded to Northrop Grumman Corp. (Bethesda, Md.) and General Dynamics Corp., Bath Iron Works (Bath, Maine) do not cover design detail but will help both shipyards prepare to transition into a detailed design phase.
