Airbus (Toulouse, France) reported on Dec. 4, 2009, that the first composite panel for the A350 XWB center wingbox (CWB) had been successfully manufactured at the company's plant in Nantes, France. Reinforced with carbon fiber, the panel has a surface area of 36m~2/388 ft~2, making it the largest "monobloc" composite component yet manufactured in Nantes. The panel was layed up using an automated tape laying machine built by MTorres (Torres de Elorz, Navarra, Spain). After assembly in Nantes, the CWB will be delivered to Airbus Saint-Nazaire (France) for integration into the airframe.
