The Boeing Go. (Seattle, Wash.) continues its string of business upticks in 2006, with a number of composites-related announcements. The company's 787 Dreamliner aircraft, for which more than 300 orders have been posted to date, has been selected by Royal Air Maroc, the national air carrier of Morocco. The company ordered four 787s, with an option for a fifth. An larger order was placed by Air India in early January, for 23 777s and 27 787s. Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India, will receive 18 737-800 aircraft. According to Air India, the 787s will replace the carrier's current fleet of Airbus A310s. As part of the deal, Boeing will invest in a regional maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) base in India, which will include a pilot training facility. Boeing claims the composites-intensive 787 will burn 20 percent less fuel and have 30 percent lower maintenance costs than similar-sized aircraft.
