The world's two largest manufacturers of commercial passenger aircraft announced reportedly temporary technical setbacks in their respective new aircraft programs. Although the problems stimulated a round of "doom and gloom" stories in the popular and business press, the rivals say the incidents will have relatively modest impact on production and delivery schedules. The Boeing Co.'s (Chicago, 111.) 787 Dreamliner program experienced its hitch during recent testing. A 33-ft/10m prototype fuselage "barrel section" was found to have voids in the composite skin during nondestructive inspection testing conducted by Boeing engineers. Yvonne Leach of Boeing 787 communications told HPG that the most likely cause of the voids was leakage in the fuselage barrel mandrel. Engineers are working to resolve the problem, which is not expected to delay the 787's delivery schedule, Leach says, adding that the company will make up lost time by producing two barrel sections on two mandrels at the same time, which then can be concurrently tested for U.S. Federal Aviation Admin. (FAA) certification of the plane's manufacturing process.
