Spirit AeroSystems Inc. (Wichita, Kan.) has signed a contract with Airbus (Toulouse, France), to design and produce a major composite fuselage structure for the latter's mid-sized, twin aisle A350 XWB passenger jet. Spirit will design and manufacture the Section 15 center fuselage frame section, a composite structure that will be approximately 65 ft long by 20 ft wide (19.8m by 6.1m) and weigh nearly 9,000 lb/4,082 kg. Spirit currently manufactures the composites forward and nose fuselage section for The Boeing Co.'s (Seattle, Wash.) similarly sized 787 Dreamliner.
