After 12 years of development, the JASSM Joint Program Office and the B-52 Systems Program Office have certified that the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) meets warfighter requirements and is ready for operational use. This declaration precedes the warfighter certification of the Initial Operational Capability, which is owned by Air Combat Command. JASSM a 2,000-lb class airborne weapon developed by Lockheed Martin, features a stealthy composite airframe that makes it extremely difficult for enemy defenses to successfully combat. Ninety-five percent of the fuselage surface area and load bearing structure is manufactured using braided carbon fiber preforms supplied by Fiber Innovations Inc. (FII, Walpole, Mass., U.S.A.). The majority of these parts are then molded by FII via the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. A previously costly hand trimming operation was eliminated on demolded VARTM parts. The company also uses net-shape preforms for fuselage components and further reduced costs by improving dimensional control of the inner mold line and using automated temperature and pressure controls to optimize resin infusion. Carbon fabric reinforcements and conventional RTM processing also are used to manufacture almost 50 percent of the remaining composite flight hardware.
