The Boeing Go. (Seattle, Wash.) announced on Sept. 23 that it has completed firm configuration of its mid-size 787 Dreamliner passenger jet, meaning the airplane's structural, propulsion and systems architecture has been finalized and will not change, says 787 program general manger Mike Bair. This marks the close of the joint development phase of the program, freeing Boeing and its project partners to move, forward with the detailed design phase. This phase will include the smallest parts and the final ply schedules for the plane's composite structures, which will make up approximately 50 percent of the airframe weight. As the detailed design phase began, Boeing selected two new partnering companies in the aircraft's construction. Composites Atlantic Ltd. (GAL, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada), an EADS Sogerma Services company, was tapped to fabricate the advanced composite diagonal brace, a critical part that attaches the engine pylon to the wing. Boeing and CAL, which have received development support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (AGOA), will collaborate on integrating the structure in the pylon-to-wing attachment section of the aircraft.
