Complexity and insidiousness of cryptic function loss mechanisms

Functional extinction (Box 1) is increasingly recognized as a key factor that leads to extinction cascades and state shifts in ecosystems [1,2]. However, as described by McConkey and O'Farrill [3], the actual process of functional decoupling can be produced by numerous factors other than simple population decline, which makes causes and factors leading to function loss much more difficult to recognize and understand. While McConkey and O'Farrill [3] make a fine case for the phenomenon of cryptic function loss and describe in detail its potential mechanisms and drivers, I address here some issues that were not described by the authors.
