摘要

Throughout the world, deliberate or accidental introductions of alien species have followed in the wake of explorers, hunters and settlers, often with devastating effects on endemic flora and fauna. Island populations have suffered disproportionately more than continents - more than 90% of extinctions since 1600 have been island forms. With more than 50% of listed endangered bird and reptile species currently found on islands, conservation actions are increasingly being directed to removal of alien species. In the past, culling programmes have eradicated several populations, including rabbits, rats, cats and goats. However, the approach has generally been successful only on small islands. Large island populations have proved much more difficult to eliminate and have consequently stimulated the exploration of alternative strategies. In a recent paper, Courchamp and Sugihara investigate the potential impact of introducing feline viruses as a means of controlling alien predator (cat, Felis catus) populations on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands (France). The paper uses mathematical models to explore predator-prey dynamics, in the presence of predator pathogens, and in combination with culling.
