摘要

When Tony Avent, owner of Plant Delights Nursery, had land on his property graded for the construction of additional greenhouses, he was left with a large amount of displaced sandy clay soil. Not wanting to pay the haul-away expense, he had it moundedin an unused area and sat back to ponder what to do next. "I always wanted a mountaintop garden," he recalls, "but I just kept buying flat tobacco land," referring to the farmland he purchased to expand the Raleigh, North Carolina, nursery. He figured he could now use the fill to create an area with varying elevations and slopes, which would allow him to test difficult-to-grow plants.
