Large soil dwellers are just as valuable as those organisms too small for us to seeIF SHEER NUMBERS were all that mattered, soil life that is invisible to the naked eye would be the clear winner. In a teaspoon of good, healthy soil, there can be millions of bacteria, protozoa, actinomycetes, fungi, nematodes and other tiny creatures that create plant nutrients, but they can be seen only through a microscope.As gardeners, we are more familiar with the larger forms of life, critters that we see scuttling, squirming, wriggling or hopping on or near the soil surface. Most of them are plant friendly, and each of them is a vital part of the soil food web. They are all interdependent, and their roles are worth getting to know.
