It's spring. Up and down the country, turf managers are geared up ready to renovate facilities. Pitches and greens are being refurbished, some with improvement, and while there are many tasks that make up a spring renovation programme, aeration remains one of the most important. Aeration is important because it tackles compaction and restores or improves air movement in the soil. It helps drainage, increases soil temperature, allows gaseous exchange, aids the breakdown of organic matter, including thatch, and can be used to integrate top-dressings into the soil profile. There is a wide variety of equipment available to achieve this.
