摘要

The Elaeagnus genus comprises more than 40 species of hardy evergreen and deciduous shrubs, grown mainly for their attractive foliage. Most forms are fast growing and suited to a wide range of aspects and free-draining soils. The evergreen species areusefully tolerant of wind and partial shade. They are also tolerant of salty air, so are perfect for coastal schemes where their copious leathery leaves make ideal hedge and screen planting. Elaeagnus has been grown in the UK since the early 17th century, when it was introduced from North America, southern Europe and the Far East, but little is written about it, and it generally seems cast as a basic utility plant for garden and landscaping projects. Some species, including E. x ebbingei, are larger-growing, up to 5m. It also makes a good hedge as it is easy to keep in shape.
