Recently released Government statistics show that sales of fresh fruit and vegetables rose by eight per cent in 2006 - the highest annual rise for 20 years. Industry experts believe that the increase in consumption could give a major lift to growers across the UK. The figures come from the Government's Family Food report, produced by DEFRA. The report looked at the purchasing habits of 16,085 people in 6,785 households across the United Kingdom, who kept diaries detailing their food purchases.
