Along with the edelweiss, the gentian is a symbol of the alpine world. In most people's minds the gentian calls up an image of the spring-flowering trumpet gentian, the Gentiana acaulis Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Yet the genus offers such a wealth of species, flowering from late spring to late autumn, that even experts are sometimes confused over species and varieties. There are gentians with white, yellow and red flowers, but the predominant colour of the genus is blue. Most make their homes among the cracks and crevices of rocks high in the alpine zones where only the strong survive. Taller species, which are more like shrubs with long, arching stems, are found in acid bogs or on the edge of high mountain forests.
