Chaenomeles: These ornamental quinces give colourful displays and can be used in a variety of locations, writes Kris Collins
Commercial production of Chaenomeles focuses on three species: C.japonica, C, speciosa and a hybrid species of the two, C. x superba, all originating in Japan, Korea and China. Across the species there are some 70 cultivars, ranging from compact plants that grow a little over 1 m, to large, shrubby forms that reach up to 5m. The genus - which is commonly referred to as the Japanese, Chinese or ornamental quince - has been popular since Victorian times for its early flowering and fragrant ornamental fruits, and remains popular in cottage and country gardens. It is used less in contemporary designs, but there is no reason why the genus cannot be employed in any situation requiring a bit of early spring colour or autumn interest.
