Spring-flowering double daisies, seen widely in municipal bedding schemes, are an essential component of bedding sales in March and April. And, these days, they can also be sold as green plants in the autumn. Cultivated forms of the lawn daisy, 8. perennis, are an impressive example of what dedicated breeders can achieve. The fully double flowers, usually around 2.5cm across, are red, pink or white - each with the distinctive yellow daisy eye, though it is occasionally buried by the mass of "quilled" or rolled petals surrounding it. Each flower is carried on a stalk around 15cm long. Blooms are produced in succession from the centre of a rosette of small, spoon-shaped green leaves.
