Showy clematis with flowers as big as plates have a tendency to obscure daintier flowered species that carry their flowers through to the autumn. But the yellow lantern-flowered Clematis orientalis and Clematis tangutica are robust growers that carry their silky seedheads into winter. Their fluffiness rivals that of the native clematis or old man's beard. Clematis vitalba. The lily or tulip-flowered species and hybrids in the Texensis Group are mid- to late-summer flowerers, usually holding their heads upwards in striking reds and pinks, unlike the more open Viticella Group. The first hybrids occurred at Jackmans of Woking in the 1890s from a Clematis texensis and 'Star of India' cross. 'Duchess of Albany' and 'Sir Trevor Lawrence' are still on the market. Both groups spring from the rootstock and flower on current season's growth. They can be tidied up in winter and cut back to one metre or below when new growth starts in early spring. Alternatively, Clematis orientalis and Clematis tangutica can just be pruned to a framework. This may leave some of last year's tangle, but will ensure earlier flowering. Combining Clematis orientalis and Clematis tangutica with shrubs is impractical due to their vigour, and they are perhaps more suited to old tree stumps or unsightly buildings for support. Although they add a sense of wildness to the garden, small sites may find them too rampant. Members of the Texensis Group are tidier and tend to be less smothering, but their scrambling, rather than climbingnature, means they need shelter from wind when growing up pergolas or walls.
