摘要

Fashion dominates many markets, and horticulture is no exception. This is readily seen in areas such as cut flowers where following a degree of promotion a little known item can quickly turn into a market leader, such as Gerbera x hybrida some 20 years ago and more recently, Eustoma (syn. Lisianthus), But in other areas, fashions can be slower to express themselves and, in the case of trees, sometimes resistive to change. When it comes to landscaping the use of trees tends to be a long-term, and often expensive, proposition, which makes proven reliability and a predictable outcome essential. How the tree will respond to management responsibilities such as pruning, as well as to potential root disturbance in street works or during later development, may also need to be factored into the buying decision. Faced with such variables, it is no wonder that many landscape and amenity planters prefer to limit their risks and go for the more mainstream tree options rather than the novelty factor.
