Fresca's Steve McVickers has been hard at work for the past two years drawing up ideas for the UK's largest glasshouse development, Thanet Earth. The 52ha Kent development will see the annual production of up to 24,000 tonnes of produce, grown on a 52-week production cycle (Grower, 27 October). The venture, carried out in partnership with three Dutch producers, promises to bring a host of benefits including price stability, efficient supply, more jobs for local people and quality produce to compete with cheap imports from southern Mediterranean producers. The blank canvas also allows for the inclusion of the latest automated production equipment and a cutting-edge combined heating and power system capable of putting enough power into the National Grid for 50,000 homes.
