The first National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) leek variety demonstration for eight years attracted a significant number of visitors keen to see how crops had coped with the exceptionally harsh winter conditions in the Cambridgeshire fens.Referring to the fact that the last leek trials were held in 2001, NIAB's Bruce Napier said: "It's been a long time waiting to see what new material is coming through." However, with 18 varieties from six companies, there was plenty to assess. Three ofthe trial varieties were open pollinated types, with the rest being hybrid varieties - something that reflects the overall pattern in the industry. "About 85 per cent of the UK area is down to hybrids," he explained.
