Retailers and landscapes know what they want. They want top quality plants delivered on time and they won't accept anything less. Rain, hail, wind and excessive sun can all damage a crop and reduce its saleability. so more and more nurserymen are looking at protection as a solution. But at what price? Extending or updating a covered production area can involve considerable investment. The choices are plentiful. New glass can easily cost 25 pound/m~2 - a price that makes some growers consider buyingsecond-hand structures. Sophisticated film-clad structures can also be expensive - up to 20 pound/m~2 or more if you look at a permanent structure and take up all the options - although more basic multi-spans will bring the price down: a single-span tunnel is likely to cost around 5 pound/m~2.
