If we hear the name George Orwell it is literary culture, not horticulture, that springs to mind. Yet Orwell was indeed an enthusiastic produce gardener. In 1940 he wrote an autobiographical note for Twentieth Century Authors, in which he proclaimed that 'Outside my work the thing I care most about is gardening, especially vegetable gardening'.As someone who regularly knew privation, Orwell recognised how central food is to our lives: in The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) he said, 'It is curious how seldom the all-importance of food is recognized. You see statues everywhere to politicians, poets, bishops, but none to cooks or bacon-curers or market gardeners.'
