摘要

There are no weddings this year, or at least none in the immediate family. Just as well, really. The spring drought caused a sort of motorway pile-up in the garden. The daffodils were out at the same time as the tulips, the lilacs, and several roses of the climbing persuasion. On going out to pollinate the peaches with the ceremonial hare's foot, we were practically blinded by a cloud of Red Admirals. These then settled on the Malm transitoria, which has grown into the M. mutabilis in the Crab Orchard, producing an effect not unlike a medium-sized galaxy in which someone has left the Christmas lights on. This distracted our attention from the corpses, of which there were several. The mats of South African daisies were putrid and hopeless, the yuccas were knackered and the golden bamboo was sere and beige.
