One of the very few things I regret about moving from the US to Britain is that lam no longer able to grow sweet corn. I've tried — at first there seemed to be no good reason why the relatively balmy climate of the Welsh Marches (as opposed to the brutal weather in western Masschusetts) should prevent me producing a supply of my favourite vegetable - or for that matter of my next favourite, tomatoes. But I soon learned that the problem is sun. There just isn't enough of it. Rain we have, fertile soil too, but plain old hot sun, day after day, is only a vague, pleasant recollection.
