The Chateau of Versailles was founded on a desire for revelry. When Louis XIII decided on the construction of his country retreat in 1623 he had it in mind, according to a Venetian ambassador, to erect 'unapiccolo casaper ricnazione a frivolity. Although the casa did not remain piccolo, the Italian gentleman's vision was confirmed: the king's tranquil retreat became the centre of carousels and firework displays under the reign of his son, Louis XIV
