Why do we collect things? I don't mean air miles or Green Shield stamps, I mean model elephants, all things hedgehog, small ceramic houses, anything with a rabbit in it, stamps, First World War paraphernalia, beer mats, bits of anything that look likeJesus, pebbles off the beach, odd socks (though that is more by default) and, yes of course, plants. It must be something deep inside our psyche, perhaps a need to hoard for hard times, and this ingrained instinct has refined itself into a passion for collecting things that are otherwise completely useless. How does it start? Is there a deliberate 'I am going to start collecting the exotically-printed tissue papers they wrap around tangerines at Christmas', or is it that you get one or two of something — they mustn't be useful — and then when you find a third the hoarding instinct kicks in and you're off?
