Alexander, the oldest surviving son of Sophie and Felix, inherited both the La Roche palace and Sofiyivka at the age of twenty-four, and by all accounts maintained the garden well, ordering an inventory of plants in the park in 1829. At first he kepthis head down as unrest stirred among the liberal scions of the leading families of Russia and Ukraine, who within the safe confines of their Masonic lodges and their country estates shared their dreams of a constitutional monarchy or even a republic. The Southern Society of the Decembrists, named for their failed uprising upon the death of Alexander I and the accession of his brother Nicholas I in December 1825, had bases in Tulchyn and Uman. Dr Kosenko mentions that key players such as Prince Sergei Volkonsky (a distant cousin of Tolstoy and inspiration for Prince Andrei in War and Peace), Vasily Davydov and the Raevsky brothers — their father was Potemkin's great-nephew and an acclaimed hero of the War of 1812 — met in secret in the Potocki gardens at La Roche and Sofiyivka.
