That great plant-collector Reginald Farrer, when ill, was in the habit of dosing himself 'with the entire contents of his medicine box, taken indiscriminately with whisky . . .' I glean this snippet from Nicola Shulman's A Rage for Rock Gardening (Short Books) which, unaccountably, passed me by when first published ten years ago. Thanks to a hearty recommendation from Christopher Woodward of the Garden Museum, I recently bought a copy and read it at a sitting. It's a masterpiece of succinct biography, weaving together the many unfortunate strands of a blighted life that only found relief in escapades involving the collecting and growing of (mostly) alpine plants.
