In 1960 John P. Humes commissioned a Japanese garden to be built on his estate on the North Shore of Long Island, New York State. An American, his interest in Asian culture was the result of trips to China and Japan where he worked as a lawyer to businesses in both countries. Inspired by the beauty of Japan's ancient gardens he and his wife Jean decided to transform a two-acre corner of their wooded property, importing a tea house as the new garden's centrepiece.
