摘要

April may be 'the cruellest month . . . mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain', but for Stan Kozak, chief horticulturist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, it must be the most nerve-wracking month, as the hanging nasturtiums take centre stage in the soaring four-storey interior courtyard, lifting the spirits of winter-weary Bostonians almost every year since Isabella Gardner began opening Fenway Court to the public the week before Easter in the early years of the last century. Morris Carter, who worked by Gardner's side for the last five years of her life and served as director after her death in 1924 until 1955, shared her passion for horticulture, though it seems he too may have found the 'Notorious Nasturtiums' a bit nerve-wracking, as this 1929 Boston Herald article of that title suggests:It is only when the word 'nasturtiums' is mentioned that a gleam almost of madness shines from his mild dark eye. If it has been a hard day, he may even be heard to utter dark threats of murder by strangulation . . . Those [who have seen the nasturtiums]will realize why no one ever forgets them and also why the patience of the most long-suffering and hospitable of curators will still continue to be tried by observant ladies who walk past the Titians but gasp with emotion over a few green tendrils covered with crimson blossom.
