I hadn't previously been to Ninfa as early as April and I approached it with apprehension, fearing its famed roses might not then be flowering. Thankfully, many were, outstanding among them being 'Madame Alfred Carriere', in full sail. Ninfa lies in the Pontine marshes, south-east of Rome at the foot of the Lepini mountains, a 4,500-foot limestone range that influences the garden's weather and guarantees its ample waters. Attempts to drain the three-hundred-square-mile marsh go back to a pre-Christian era, but it was Mussolini's dykes and pumps in the 1930s that finally expunged the malarial scourge. Anyway, April is not a mosquito month.
