摘要

Bob Dash's life and work is a testament to the benefits, for the right person, of largely avoiding formal education. A childhood of what he once described as 'permanent convalescence', spent partly in New York City, partly at his parents' very different other house, one in the then deeply rural wooded hills on the border between New York State and New Jersey, meant that instead of going through the routine of school he mostly stayed at home, where his understanding parents simply allowed their clearly gifted son to 'go where the spirit moved him'. As a result, as well as the passions for painting and gardening, both of which lasted throughout his life, he developed as an adolescent and a young man considerable talents both as a musician (his first career choice was in fact to become a concert pianist) and as a writer (he had poems published and as a young man in New York he worked as a reviewer for the magazines Art and Art News).
