摘要

The flora of Crete has fascinated us for generations. Three centuries before the Christian era, Theophrastos of Eresos, the 'father of botany', learnt about the local species of palm, a dumpy relative of the date palm, which grows close to the shoreline of the island, and about the far-famed dittany found clinging to limestone cliffs. Generations earlier the people we call the Minoans decorated their pottery with native Cretan plants and even made golden replicas of sand crocuses and the fruits of hartwort. The flowers of Crete have an ancient and ineluctable attraction. I need not add that tulips have the same property. Financial bubbles have burst because of them and ruined the speculators. Numerous tomes have been written in their praise: link Crete with tulips and you have a romantic adventure. Four different tulips, in my opinion, occur on Crete, and one of these displays patterns of variations that have led to claims that there is a fifth — so let me name the four, and the fifth will be ourmain subject.
