摘要

Nymans, near Handcross in Sussex, now in the care of the National Trust, is a garden which owes its creation to three generations of a wealthy and stylish family working in co-operation with outstanding head gardeners. In 1890, German-born Ludwig Messel bought a house and 600 acres in a part of the Sussex Weald which already contained several great gardens. Wakehurst Place, Sheffield Park and William Robinson's Gravetye Manor are all nearby; Wilfred Loder gardened at High Beeches, with which Nymans shares a boundary; his son Edmund Loder acquired Leonardslee a few miles to the west, opposite which was another great garden, South Lodge, owned by Frederick Godman.
