摘要

I have just been in the garden weeding the vegetable patch. As always when a human being with a hoe or a trowel ventures to disturb the soil, an inquisitive robin soon appears. Wrens and dunnocks also reside in the garden, but they never come to watch. Robins are delightful birds, made unafraid by close proximity to a lumbering gardener: they are always there, summer and winter. He — or was it she? — sat on the winter jasmine and watched with bright, dark eyes, burbling softly away as if indulgingin a one-sided conversation, and paying more attention to what I could not see than to me. It was nonchalantly preening, as if to say, 'Just ignore me, I am only on the look out for some tasty grub or juicy bug'. When I go into the front garden, which also contains plenty of weeds, and start weeding there, a robin will quickly make itself known — the chances are it is a different robin because they are fiercely territorial and will chase away any intruder robins that stray into their own patch of shrubbery or garden.
